Edison Language Academy is Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District’s Dual Immersion Elementary School. As its motto states, “Together in Two Languages/ Juntos a traves de dos idiomas”, students learn to understand, speak, read and write in both English and Spanish. Edison is also the first step in the SMMUSD Language Academy, which continues at John Adams Middle School and Santa Monica High School – giving graduates the opportunity to continue to develop their language skills from Kindergarten through 12th grade.
While Edison teaches in two languages, they follow the same state curriculum frameworks and grade level content standards as all public elementary schools in California. In April 1986, the district gave its approval and created the Edison Language Academy. The school was designated a magnet – allowing students from inside and outside the district to maintain the optimal language balance. The school has won numerous awards, including receiving a Seal of Excellence from the California Association for Bilingual Education and four Title I Academic Achievement Awards from the California State Department of Education (2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009) for substantially exceeding academic growth targets for all groups of students. The school’s Academic Performance Index (API) has climbed steadily from 709 to 882 points over the last nine years (a 183 point gain!). All of the school’s numerically significant subgroups also have API scores over 800.
